Exploring the Equestrian World of "The Collateral Kid" work in progress by Karen Over
For Scribophile members following this work and wanting to critique, but have questions about some of the more technical aspects of the horsemanship, I hope this will be helpful. For those of you wanting to learn more, or just to see what some of that stuff actually looks like, I'll be adding links to any videos I come across that may be enlightening, or just plain fun. First up is a lovely set of training videos on changing leads at the canter, from simple (through the walk) to flying (at the canter, without breaking stride, which Brent would have to make a horse do during a round of jumps,) to tempi changes. (During the dressage exhibition, Darby and Rio perform tempo three across the diagonal, changing lead every third stride.) You can watch the video here. You'll notice this particular training arena has a mirror setup across one end.
A couple of comparison videos : a hunt seat medal finalist here vs a junior show jumping fastest round here. These are both on facebook Watch, so if you have trouble viewing, please let me know! These give a great comparison between the jumping styles, the hunter very steady and smooth, the jumper very quick, scrambling through the turns to save time.
Had two videos pop up on facebook recently. "Fanta" calls his own show jumping round, and attempts to explain his bucking fit in the midst of it. This is very much like Ace of Spades and Darby - note the patience of Fanta's rider, not to mention the skill. Do have your sound on for this one! The second video is something I could see Darby doing under these circumstances - it's Tom Crisp taking a "swim" for Great Britain at the May 2023 Badminton Horse Trials. You can see him get off balance landing the "in" jump, almost hangs on over the "out," but you can see the splash coming here.
I've also found examples of the pendulums Brent displays at the science fair. The cradle balance here, and my favorite, a giant outdoor wave pendulum made of bowling balls, here.
